THORNTON, CO… For the ninth year in a row, Thornton has been named a "Playful City USA.” The designation is made by KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to bringing play back into children’s lives. According to KaBOOM!, the city of Thornton was chosen for its emphasis on building and maintaining play areas in the city, and for creating ‘great, safe places for kids to play, making it as possible for kids to learn, explore, grow and just be kids.’ “During the summer we offer a lot of activities,” says Thornton Recreation Manager Jan Kiehl. “We have a lot of summer programs, such as girls softball, track, tennis, swim team, as well as outdoor pool activities, and the amenities at Carpenter Park.”
KaBOOM! CEO, James Siegal, says “Communities like Thornton are transforming ordinary places into playful spaces and using play as a solution to the challenges facing their residents.” Playful City USA honorees are taking bold action to ensure kids have great places to play – all with the ultimate goal of making play the easy choice for all kids, no matter where they live. “The well-being of our communities starts with the well-being of our kids, and play is critical for them to thrive,” says Siegal. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all kids get the childhood they deserve filled with play.”
