Thornton named Large Community of the Year
EDIE Award given by Economic Development Council of Colorado

THORNTON, CO… The Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC) has announced the recipients of the 2017 EDIE Awards, honoring the top people, places and projects in economic development. Among those honorees: the city of Thornton.

The EDCC named Thornton the “Large Community of the Year” for a variety of projects, including:
• Thornton Water Project, a $400+ million pipeline project to provide water for Thornton until buildout
• Simon Premium Outlets, the state’s only premium outlets development at 365,000 sq. ft.
• Amazon Robotics Sort Facility, Colorado’s largest industrial facility at 2.4 million sq. ft.

“We made a conscious decision to make economic development a priority in Thornton,” said Thornton Economic Development Director John Cody. “After the recession, we knew we had to take a serious approach and started looking around the state at what works, and what doesn’t work. That was the beginning of our efforts to employ economic development as our growth strategy.”
The EDCC is a state-wide, nonprofit organization dedicated to successful, responsible economic development. EDCC professionally represents the collective economic development interests of both the private and public sectors. “It’s the hard work and contributions of communities, institutions and individuals like Thornton that make Colorado economically successful,” said EDCC Board Chair John Hall.
