Recruitment

The Fire Department currently uses the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) testing and screening process to hire new firefighters. Starting in 2005, testing will be done four times a year in February, April, July and October. The application deadline is one month prior to the test date. You must submit an application and $40 testing fee to DRCOG. Those who successfully pass the written test are placed in an eligibility pool for one year from the date the list is certified. As vacancies occur within any of the participating agencies, applicants are selected from the applicant pool. Further testing is then conducted by the City of Thornton. For questions regarding the DRCOG testing process or for an application, please give them a call at 303-480-6714 or visit their website at www.drcog.org.

The City of Thornton Fire Department requires the following to become a firefighter:

  • Minimum age 21

  • Current EMT/Basic or higher certification

  • Valid, non-restricted Colorado Drivers License

  • Pass DRCOG testing and screening process

  • Pass physical agility test; pass entry level oral board examination.

After completion of these sections, applicants are ranked on an eligibility list. When there is an opening, applicant names are contacted to complete and successfully pass the remainder of the testing process which includes: background check, psychological exam and physical examination.
