Firefighters frequently are confronted with situations that require quick decisions based on special skills and judgment.  A comprehensive training program is essential to ensure firefighters are prepared to deal with most situations.

The Thornton Fire Department Training Division is responsible for the skill and career development of all personnel.  Through training programs administered by department personnel, we strive to raise the level of professionalism and safety of all employees to the standards identified by the City of Thornton Administration.

The Thornton Fire Department Training Division instructs and prepares entry-level firefighters with a state recognized curriculum in:  fire/rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency medical operations.  All recruit firefighters go through a 12-week, 480-hour certification course.  The course includes intense physical training, as well as a challenging academic program.    The academy training program concludes with a written and practical skills testing evaluation to obtain a State Firefighter 1 Certification before being assigned to a station.

After the Training Academy course of study has been completed, Probationary Firefighters receive On-The-Job training for a period of one year before receiving a permanent assignment.

The Training Division also ensures that all current personnel comply with state and federal mandates regarding continuing education requirements.  Advanced and specialized technical training, along with professional development, are provided to various members of the department.
