Public Education Information

The Thornton Fire Department is dedicated to providing community education programs to meet the needs, demands, and interests of the citizens in our community. Basic fire safety skills, including what to do when your clothes catch on fire, home escape planning in the event of a fire, and how to report an emergency, are taught to preschool and elementary school age students. We believe that laying the foundation for fire safety and injury prevention begins during these formative years.

But that is just the beginning and we build upon that foundation by offering a variety of other programs, targeting audiences from the young child to senior citizens in our community. Some of the programs we offer are: CPR training, Juvenile Fire Setting Intervention, Middle School Prevention Education, Senior Safety Awareness Presentations, Business Fire Safety Workshops, Car Seat Safety Check-Up Events, Station Tours and others.

Our education programs are always evolving to add new and vital programs that address our consistently changing environment. But the objective is always the same, and that is to empower citizens by giving them the information and skills they need to make safe and knowledgeable choices to enhance the quality of life.

We are always there when you need us, to provide critical and needed assistance in an emergency. BUT, our primary goal is to keep our citizens safe and to prevent accidents and injuries.

Community Events

The Thornton Fire Department is available for station tours, school appearances, and other community events. Fire station tours are scheduled Monday through Friday between 9 a.m.-6 p.m., although some evening tours are scheduled as necessary. A two-week advance notice is needed to schedule all station tours and public appearance requests. For more information, please call the Public Education Officer at 303-538-7657.

Fire Department Mascot

Dalmatians have traditionally been linked with fire departments and the Thornton Fire Department has its own, new spotted mascot! Actually, it’s a "fire safety" Dalmatian dog costume that will be used to help tech fire safety education.

The safety dog mascot will make appearances at community events, in parades and at schools during fire department presentations about fire safety. The Fire Department is seeking volunteers to wear the Dalmatian suit during events to bring the safety dog to life. Contact the Public Education Officer, if you could donate your time to share valuable fire safety tips with the community, at 303-538-7657.

Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Program

This program offers education, information and referrals for parents of children who have demonstrated curiosity of fire or have set fires. The objective of the program is to understand why children set fires. The evaluation of the juvenile and his or her family includes a determination of the nature and severity of the presenting firesetting behavior. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine the likelihood that another firesetting incident will occur in the future.

The Thornton Fire Department will provide an educational intervention to all juveniles and their families who are evaluated. For more information, please call the Public Education Officer at 303-538-7657.
