Thorntonfest Goes Green!

Summer festival will have ‘green’ recycle and conservation component

THORNTON, CO…For the first time, Thornton’s annual summer festival will have a green component, and it won’t just be the green of summer. City staff will work with festival-goers to lessen the environmental impact of Thorntonfest. There will be recycling stations for all plastic drink bottles, paperboard and cardboard. That includes:

• all plastic beverage containers sold at Thorntonfest 
• used festival programs and other miscellaneous paper products  
• other discarded plastic and aluminum items

There will also be recycling and water conservation information available at the City’s Recycling Education Center, which will feature fun information for kids and adults about ways to reuse, reduce and recycle. “Thorntonfest embraces the spirit of community involvement,” says Recreation Manager Jan Kiehl. “We know how important recycling and conservation is to our citizens.”  Weather permitting there will be a Thornton recycle truck at Thorntonfest for kids to check out and see part of the recycling process.

Thornton’s public education efforts have also been successful. Hundreds of Thornton water-saving champions have pledged to save 1,770,250 gallons of water per year. Thornton trash and recycle customers increased their recycling by 100 tons in February alone.

Thorntonfest will also feature bike corral areas for all bike riding festival-goers to leave their bikes while they enjoy the day’s festivities. Please bring a lock to secure your bike.

Thorntonfest takes place Saturday, May 17 at Multipurpose Fields, 108th and Colorado from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
