FLOODING IN THORNTON
What you should know about Floods!
When sever weather threatens, tune to local radio or television channels for flood alerts. You should listen for these key words:
- Flood Watch
- flooding is possible
- Flash Flood Watch
- a flash flood may occur quickly with little warning
- Flood Warning
- a flood is occuring or will occur soon: it may take several hours to develop
- Flash Flood Warniing
- a flash flood is occurrring or will happen very soon; precautions should be taken
Flood Safety
- Stay Alert to weather bulletins that wwarn of flash flooding
- In the event evacuation of a home or business is necessary, turn off all utilities at the main switch, BUT ONLY IF TIME PERMITS. Do not touch any electrical equipment. Report downed power lines to the Utility Company. Any source of electricity should be considered dangerous during and after flooding.
- Do not walk or drive through flowing water
- While drowning is the number one cause of flood deaths, after a flood, be alert to debris or slippery sufraces that can cause injuries.
- Be alert for gas leaks. Use a flashlight to search for leaks, never use an open flame device.
- Clean everything that got wet. Floodwaters pick up sewage and chemicals from roads, farms, factories and buildings. Spoiled food, flooded cosmetics and medicine can be health hazards. When in doubt, throw it out.
