Thornton residents can drop off unwanted household chemicals and electronic devices on May 7, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Hyland Hills Water World, 89th Avenue and Pecos Street. The roundup is a regional effort between Adams County and the cities of Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, and Thornton, and is being coordinated by Tri-County Health Department. Proof of residency is required.  Accepted items include oil-based paint products, automotive fluids, vehicle batteries, house and garden chemicals, fuels, empty propane tanks (20 pounds or less), mercury, and rimless car and pick-up tires ($2 charge per tire). A voluntary $20 per vehicle donation is encouraged to help offset chemical disposal expenses.  Residents are also encouraged to drop off unwanted electronics at this event. There is a fee for the recycling of televisions ($10 each) and computer monitors ($5 each) – cash or checks only. All other electronic recycling is free. Certain restrictions apply and no business or commercial waste is accepted. For more information, call 303-846-6249 or visit www.tchd.org.

Thornton introduces new trial recycling location3/30/2011
The City of Thornton and the Adams 12 School District have teamed up to introduce a new trial recycling location in Thornton. It will be located at North Star Park, on the south side of 88th Avenue, a quarter mile east of Huron Street. This recycle drop-off site will provide Thornton’s west side residents with a convenient recycle drop-off center. “What makes a drop-off site work is neighborhood ownership which reduces the chance for some folks to dump trash or other debris,” says Thornton Environmental Services Manager Adam Lovato.  The site opens on April 1, 2011, and will be monitored for six months to determine if usage merits consideration as a permanent recycle location.
Thornton currently has four other recycle drop-off sites, including:
  • Municipal Services Center Entrance at 88th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard
  • Carpenter Recreation Center at 112th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard
  • Fire Station #4 at 128th Avenue just west of Lafayette Street
  • Fire Station #5 at 140th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard
The City also offers a curbside recycling program with twice-a-month pickup as part of its residential trash service. For more information on Thornton’s trash and recycling programs or specific information related to acceptable recyclables, call 720-977-6200 or visit the City’s website at www.cityofthornton.net.
