Harvest Fest Fishing Derby ~ 7-10 a.m.Grandview Ponds * 4401 E. 104th Avenue This event is open to children 4-12 years of age when accompanied by an adult. Prizes will be awarded for the longest fish caught in age categories that include: 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 year olds. A prize will also be awarded to the Most Authentic Fisherman! Participants must bring own fishing pole, bait and supplies.
Thornton’s annual Fishing Derby at the Grandview Ponds located at 4401 E. 104th Avenue is feeling the effects of the drought and sizzling hot summer. City staff usually stocks the ponds with fish prior to the fishing derby, but current conditions are not making it possible to do this year. The derby will continue this year, but conditions for actually catching fish are much more challenging. Because of the conditions, the City is not charging the $1 fee to participate in the event this year. Pancake Breakfast ~ 7:30 - 9:30 a.m.Thornton Senior Center * 9471 Dorothy Blvd.
The Thornton Senior Center will be hosting an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast for the community. The menu will include pancakes, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, juice, and coffee. Fee: $4/adults and $2.50/seniors 55 and older and children 12 and younger. Skatepark Competition ~ 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.The Thornton Skatepark comes alive with the thrill of competition for rollerbladers, bike riders and skateboarders! There are three skill levels for each division. The registration fee is $11 for residents and $13 for non-residents. Visit the Skatepark Competition page for additional details. Salsa Tasting Contest ~ 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.Open to any salsa cook in the area 18 years of age or older! Contestants must provide at least three gallons of their salsa for tasting purposes. Salsa must be prepared in advance and commercial salsas are not permitted. Awards presentation will begin at 3 p.m. The entry fee is $12 for Thornton residents and $17 for nonresidents. TASHCOThe Thornton Arts, Sciences and Humanities Council (TASHCO) would like to invite you to come by and watch local artists at work. As each artist has their own way of interpreting a subject, we will have a group of artists looking at the same subject and creating a piece using their unique styles and mediums. Feel free to observe each artist and ask questions as they work. You might even win one of the finished pieces! Harvest Fest BazaarThe Bazaar will feature business, nonprofit and craft exhibitors. Experience some great shopping venues provided by participating craft exhibitors, home businesses and other various vendors as well as discover an interesting array of exhibits from local businesses and nonprofit organizations. Kidz ZoneFollow the laughter and the screams of delight to the northeast end of the Community Park as it comes alive with fun and activities geared to children, including carnival inflatables, pony rides, petting zoo, face painting and walk-around entertainment! Many of the activities will be free, and others will involve a small charge. Food CourtLeave your picnic basket at home and enjoy the full festival experience by partaking in the unique assortment of menu items provided by our food vendors. With a variety of food available, from hotdogs and burritos to funnel cakes and ice cream, there is something for every palate. Beer GardenAdults age 21 and over are invited to stop in and enjoy the beer garden on the Harvest Fest grounds to socialize with other adults while enjoying an ice cold beverage!
