The City of Thornton Police Department is composed of 161 commissioned police officers and 73 non-commissioned employees. It is headed by Chief Randy Nelson and operates under three divisions (Administration, Detectives and Patrol), each overseen by a Deputy Chief.

It is the mission of the Thornton Police Department to preserve safety and help maintain the quality of life in the City of Thornton through professional, ethical, impartial and community-oriented law enforcement services.

The emphasis of the Police Department is crime prevention and deterrence through an on-going partnership between the police department and the community it serves.
