ET Rate — a measure of water lost from the landscape through evaporation of water from the soil and the transpiration of water from plants. Helpful in determining how much water to replace.
Thornton Forestry is dedicated to the stewardship of trees and other plants throughout the City. We provide advice to Thornton residents concerning their landscapes and the plants associated with them. We design, select, plant and maintain trees, shrubs, perennial and annual flowers in the City of Thornton park system using the best available horticultural information and technology.

Forestry programs and services
Trees for Tomorrow - this annually funded program provides trees to City residents on a cost share basis. This program is available in the spring.
Forestry/Horticulture Advice - Forestry staff is available to meet with you, at your residence or business, to discuss issues and/or problems that you may be having with your landscape.
Annual Flower Program - Forestry staff manages flower beds at several locations throughout the City. The City is always looking for volunteers to help in the design, selection, planting and maintenance of these colorful beds.
Arbor Day Celebration and Tree Planting - Forestry staff is very interested in partnering with homeowner associations, business groups, schools and other entities to plant trees in our park system. Colorado Arbor Day is typically celebrated on the 3rd Friday in April.
Xeriscape Garden - the City maintains a xeriscape demonstration garden at the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center site. This garden is divided into 3 water use zones which may help to show residents various plant species and how they perform in our arid climate.
Volunteers
Thornton Forestry is always interested in talking to people who have an interest in forestry and horticulture and would like to volunteer for tasks in the Xeriscape Garden or in our annual flower bed and forestry operations. The extent of your efforts could be anything from volunteering at a one time event up to helping us manage one of our programs.
