Your valuable tax dollars are at work, and we want to expend our resources appropriately and efficiently. There are some neighborhood problems that do not fall under our jurisdiction. In general, we can act on behalf of the public at large – we cannot take action on behalf of one citizen against another.
Neighbor Disputes
The City cannot handle neighbor disputes or civil problems that do not violate public law. If a neighbor’s tree or other plantings drops leaves or debris in your yard, or may cause damage to a fence or other structure. Irrigation water may also run from one property onto another. These conditions are private matters between the two property owners and the City has no jurisdiction. Colorado Legal Services offers self-help legal information for civil legal matters, a list of legal clinics and other referral information for low-income residents. Esthetics
The City cannot handle complaints about a condition that is simply "ugly" or "unattractive," such as "ugly" cars or paint jobs on homes. Visual attractiveness does not constitute a code violation.
Homeowners' Association (HOA) Covenants
In addition to City Code requirements, many subdivisions are further regulated by Home Owners Associations that impose covenants not monitored or enforced by the City. The City does not assist with violations of HOA covenants that are not also regulations of the City Code. For information on what covenants may apply to your residence, or to report a covenant violation, contact your Home Owners Association directly.
