Val Vigil
Val Vigil

Councilmember, Ward 2

Val Vigil was born in Taos, New Mexico and raised in Costilla, NM (a small town in northern New Mexico that borders Colorado in the San Luis Valley) until he graduated from High School in 1966. When he started school, he only spoke Spanish and he and his family cultivated and hunted for about 90 percent of the food they ate. Growing up in that small community instilled a strong work ethic in him at an early age and those ethics have been his claim to his success in life.

Val attended Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado and graduated with a double major in Business Administration and Secondary Education. After graduation, he taught school in his hometown in New Mexico for two years and then moved back to Colorado.

He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Annabelle Vigil, for 44+ years. They have two daughters, Nadine Cordova and Valerie Vigil, one son-in-law, Sammy Cordova, and three grandchildren, Brandon, Jared and Amanda. In 1973, Val and his family moved to Adams County where his two daughters attended school in the Adams 12 Five Star School District, both graduating from Northglenn High School.  His three grandchildren graduated from Thornton High School.  Because of his strong family ties, he has been a strong supporter of the Adams 12 Five Star School District. He has lived in his house in Ward 2 for over 20 years.

Val has been involved in the community for over 38 years.  Some of the organizations he has been involved with are the Front Range Community College Business Technologies Advisory Committee, District 12 FIVE Star Schools Hispanic Advisory Council, Norwest Hispanic Advisory Committee, Adams County Democratic Latinos/PAC, Board of Director of the Adams 14 Educational Foundation, Board of Director of the Partnerships for Healthy Communities, Board of Director of the Adams County Community Reach Foundation, Thornton Revitalization Task Force and more.

In 1998, Val was elected to serve in the State Legislature as the House District 32 State Representative which included original Thornton, Commerce City and Henderson.  He was re-elected to this position three more times and served for a total of eight years at the State Legislature. He has been a small business owner for over 38 years.  He does income tax preparation, accounting, real estate, and is an independent associate with Prepaid Legal Services, Inc.
