Volunteer Thornton
Volunteer Thornton is a program to manage
volunteers who help implement our programs and services in the various city departments.
Participants are individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds, interests and technical skills.
Volunteer Thornton draws from the whole community: from students,
homemakers, workers, and retirees to service organizations and social community clubs. We
strive to involve you -- the volunteer -- in designing volunteer experiences
that are both challenging and rewarding.
Individual programs within Volunteer Thornton include...
Keep Thornton Beautiful (KTB) and Environmental Services Program
... involves individuals and groups, adults and children, in litter control and beautification
of areas of public access, such as streets, parks, and open space. KTB sponsors the annual
Great American Cleanup, a community-wide event held in conjunction with Keep America
Beautiful Month in April.
Youth and Teen Volunteer Corps
... a summer volunteer program designed to
cultivate responsibility in Thornton youths, ages 11-18. Volunteers assist with arts and
crafts activities and supervise younger children participating in the Adventure Club at
the Thornton Community Center and oversee portable playground equipment and activities.
The volunteers also experience various outings across the state. They have volunteered at
nursing homes, park clean-ups, trail building and special events (Adams County Fair and
KidsSpree).
Elderly and Disabled Assistance (EDA)
... an expansion of Thornton's Snowbusters
program that has successfully provided snow removal for hundreds of elderly and disabled
residents of Thornton. Volunteers also assist with weed control and general yard clean up
and maintenance for those physically and financially unable to undertake it themselves.
Senior Services
... from active participation on the Senior Citizen Advisory Board to
providing personal, administrative and facility support, volunteers of all ages can assist
with a wide variety of memorable activities and programs at the Thornton Senior Center.
Victim Service Unit
... operating out of the Thornton Police Department, the
Victim Service Unit is a shared effort between the cities of Thornton and Northglenn,
which offers crime victims support assistance and counseling at a time when it is most
needed. Volunteers provide 24-hour crisis intervention to crime victims and incidences
related to sudden death or serious injury to which the police have been called. Volunteer
victim advocates may respond to crime scenes, hospitals, police stations or other
designated areas, and are a resource regarding information on crime victim compensation.
Volunteers must complete 40 hours of training and commit to three 12-hour shifts each
month.
