Front Yard Forest Program

Back to Parks Page

Thornton is again offering the Front Yard Forest program to city residents. This program is 17 years old and getting better by the year!

The intent of the program is to plant trees in resident yards to further develop our urban forest and to create tree-lined streets within the City. Trees provide shade, provide food for wildlife, boost home value, absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen and aid in lowering temperatures to the landscape and homes in the hot summer months.

The Trees

Forestry staff closely examined the types of trees that should be offered considering our dry, semi-arid climate; and previous requests from residents. Visit the following page to view the five varieties of trees offered this year, complete with descriptions, photos, and details...

Program Guidelines

  • This year, the City would like to plant 90 trees.
  • The deciduous and ornamental trees are 2” caliper and approximately 12’ tall.
  • The program allows the City and residents to share the cost of quality nursery trees. The City will contribute the first $125 toward the cost of the tree, with the resident contributing the balance, per tree.
  • The trees are planted in front yards only, by a contractor selected by the City.
  • The trees are warranted for one (1) year following planting.
  • Registration begins on Monday, February 18, 2008. We will be at the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center (11151 Colorado Blvd.) between 7:00-9:00am on February 18. Registration runs until Friday March 7, 2008 or until sold out.
  • Full payment is due at the time of sign up.
  • The program is open to City single family residents only, one (1) tree per residence. Program participants must provide proof of residency at time of registration.
  • For more information about the program call 303-255-7875.
