Operations Division

The Fire Operations division is responsible for handling all emergencies within the City of Thornton. The basic work unit of fire operations is the engine company. The staffing on an engine company is a minimum of three personnel – one company officer, one driver/operator, and one firefighter/paramedic. The primary services delivered by the fire operations division are...

  • Fire Suppression
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Hazardous Materials Response
  • Technical Rescue
  • Public Education
  • Fire Prevention
  • Fire and Arson Investigation
  • Community Service Activities

Fire Prevention Division

The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for the enforcement of City of Thornton laws, codes, and ordinances, including the International Fire Code and nationally recognized standards. Through plan review, inspections, meetings with citizens and design professionals, and continuing education, the Prevention staff works toward the protection of life and property from the effects of fire.

The Fire Prevention Division is administered by the Fire Marshal. His staff includes three Fire Protection Engineers who perform many tasks, including the technical review and approval of construction, development, and fire protection system plans. Fire alarm system, fire sprinkler system, building construction, site utility, and various other plans are reviewed to ensure that buildings have adequate access roads, sufficient water supplies and fire hydrants, and correctly designed fire protection systems. The Prevention staff also performs various inspections to ensure the correct installation and maintenance of fire protection systems, and to verify compliance with all permit applications.

Ambulance Services Division

On Sept. 1, 2004 the Thornton Fire Department implemented an ambulance service for the citizens of Thornton. This service provides an advanced life support transport unit staffed with a paramedic and an emergency medical technician. In conjunction with the City’s advance life support fire engines, these new units ensure continuous care from pickup through delivery to the appropriate emergency facility. To ensure the safety of citizen lives and property, these ambulance units are staffed with personnel that are dually trained for emergency medical services and firefighting duties. This places more individuals on the fire scenes to ensure a safer, more effective firefighting force for the citizens of Thornton.

The Thornton Fire Department partners with North Suburban Medical Center in order to provide training, quality assurance and medical oversight of the level of care delivered to the citizens. In 2007, Thornton Fire Department responded to over 5,600 emergency medical calls.
