Thornton Expands Recycling Program
Customer demand drives collections to twice a month
Thornton City Council has directed City staff to double its One Container Recycling program from once a month to twice a month collection. The expanded program will rollout beginning February 4. Thornton trash and recycle customers will be receiving calendars in the mail with their designated recycle days. If a customer would like to find out their recycle day, they can go to the City’s Web site.
Launched just over a year ago, the One Container Recycling program has been popular with City recyclers. While some customers have requested additional free recycling carts, many prefer the convenience of a more frequent pickup schedule.
“We’re very pleased that Council has given us the green light to move forward our newly enhanced program” said Environmental Services Manager Adam Lovato. While no increase in the monthly fee is expected, Council has asked for a review of the program in a year to evaluate its effectiveness and cost.
As part of the move to twice a month pick-up for recyclables, City Council also directed City staff to launch a public awareness campaign to tell residents about the increased service. City staff will be promoting the recycling program in local newspapers, in the City’s magazine Inside Thornton, and on the City cable channel KTTV-8 and at City festivals throughout the year.
The City’s recycling program is open to all City of Thornton trash customers. One Container Recycling means customers can recycle the following items in their green cart:...
- Newspapers and inserts
- Plastic bottles
- Glass bottles and jars
- Aluminum cans
- Steel cans
- Junk mail
- Office paper
- Magazines and catalogs
- Flattened cardboard
- Paperboard (i.e. cereal boxes)
- Phone books
- Brown paper bags
- Aluminum foil and pie tins
- Empty aerosol cans
